description

Cowboy 2.18.0 and later may accumulate unlimited data from an HTTP/1.1 keep-alive connection while a request handler is still running. An unauthenticated remote attacker could exhaust Erlang VM memory and disrupt service when they can reach an endpoint that keeps requests active long enough.

mitigation

Update Cowboy to a release containing upstream fix 3a630c07e1521abf63a1b9ea080509aa1337b60d. Do not rely solely on request-line, header, or idle-timeout limits to prevent this condition.

outcome

Contextual check: a technique exists and was validated, but no deterministic check could cover this one.
