description

markdown-it versions 14.1.0 through 14.3.2 and 15.0.0 through 15.0.2 may consume disproportionate CPU when parsing malformed Markdown reference definitions. An attacker who can submit Markdown to a service can delay the Node.js event loop with unterminated reference labels or titles; default parser settings are affected.

mitigation

Upgrade markdown-it to version 14.3.3 or 15.0.3, or a later release. Until upgraded, disable reference parsing for untrusted Markdown and enforce request-size limits.

fixed in 14.3.3, 15.0.3

outcome

Contextual check: a technique exists and was validated, but no deterministic check could cover this one.
