description

vm2 NodeVM configurations using a custom external resolver and host-context module loading can incorrectly authorize files outside the intended allowlist. An untrusted guest may cause a matching neighboring host file to be loaded and have its initialization run in the host process; attacker-controlled guest code and the affected resolver configuration are required.

mitigation

Upgrade the npm vm2 package to version 3.12.2 or later. Until upgraded, do not run untrusted code with custom external resolution combined with host-context loading.

fixed in 3.12.2

outcome

Mechanism verified: the exploit fired on the vulnerable build and stayed silent on the patched one, but the server it ran against was ours, so no check ships for it.
